We started West on Friday 8/3 by going north to SG’s brother’s home in Killington. The Plan of departure went well. We planned for 10:00 and get out at 11. We left at 1:00 and quickly returned for some forgotten item already forgotten and actually hit the road at 2:00.
We got there without getting rear-ended. Rick and Helen are great hosts! This was the first time I saw Killington without snow and crowds. Really nice, GREEN, and peaceful.
Saturday: Susan and Helen shopped while Rick and I went to Home Depot and then to a large Farmer’s Market in Rutland (new town to me). Nice; lots of old buildings in great shape.
Then a swim in the local swimming hole. Nice dinner.
Sunday: Learned of Billy Cotter’s demise.
We headed west again by going north to Burlington (new to Susan). We rode up Rt 100. If you never have, Do.
Destination: Lake Placid. The 1:30 Rule (find a place to stay) seriously violated.
Left Burlington by ferry to Port Kent NY. Nice 1 hour ride. Cheap — $37/car and two seniors. Was even cheaper because Susan hid in the trunk with the dirty laundry. No more ferry rides….
South on 9N to Au Sable Forks. Saw a very spooky building and on a rainy day I’m going to see if I can find out its history. Pics may be attached; maybe not. New to this blog stuff.
We visited Whiteface Mountain on the way. Saw the Olympic Ski Jump structures…looks like straight out of Star Wars. Entered Lake Placid Village on Mirror Lake. Stayed in the Mirror Lake Inn – Outrageous food, view, room…top drawer all the way.
Monday: played in Mirror Lake. Mirror Lake is worth the stay. Great place for a gang to get a bunch of rooms and hang. No motor boats, jet skis, etc; beautiful warm water, paddle boards, kayaks, etc. and a little village to shop and eat in.
Hit the road at 2:00 for Chaumont NY. SG’s sister Liz and her friend Mike. Her sister Peg and Hus Rick were there already. (See a pattern here?) All two lane highways. Stopped in Saranac Lake to shop for ski gloves – (no size XLs) – and ogle old boats and new ski-boats. Great leisurely ride through spectacular scenery in the Adirondacks.
Arrived at Mike’s place – a 4 bedroom cottage and spectacular home. May be a pix attached.

Learned how to insert photos. Scary place and Whiteface. Here’s Mike’s:

TUESDAY!!! What a wonderful day to get older. We went to the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton NY – right on the St. Lawrence Seaway. Cool place to see old boats. Worth it if you’re up this way. Came back to Mike’s and the ladies packed a picnic dinner for the boat. So we celebrated the start of my 72nd year (yes, I don’t believe it either) with a sunset cruise on Guffin (bring your Muffin) Bay. I can’t thank this crowd for a wonderful Bday. My gift was false eyelashes (???). Various colorful comments made. I did NOT put them on. I did Sk…y D.p.
Wednesday: A walk along the lake, a dip (suit this time) and all the peace and quiet I can handle…Oh S…! They’re back….
